What is Performance Art?
Contemporary performance art is one of the ‘live art’ disciplines and encompasses several different formats, from task–based actions and rituals to durational and interventional pieces. Most involve some form of movement and gesture and some include vocalization or story telling.

Program
Participants are individually assisted while exploring the technical, practical and artistic challenges involved in producing performance art pieces andperformative video in a supportive and collaborative environment.
Examples of both contemporary and historical performance works will be examined through daily lectures, video viewings and group discussions.
Each participant will engage in several live performance actions exploring the different forms of performance art and everyone will take part in discussions about the individual pieces. Judith will also provide one-on-one guidance and assistance throughout this process.
Participants will then work in pairs, one performing an action, while the other captures it on digital video. Documentation may be straightforward or may be designed to result in a stand-alone performative video work. Each individual will then edit the raw footage and may manipulate existing sound or add external sound. There will be technical assistance available throughout this process.
Screenings of your video project/s in progress are followed by critical feedback to assist you in bringing your final video project to a public screening on the last day of the Engaged Body program.
This workshop will be of particular interest to visual artists who want to explore live art forms as part of their practice and also to those engaged in other disciplines such as dance, film or theatre who want to expand their practices across disciplines.
